In developing a general illumination LED luminaire, Ruud initially examined a highly conventional strategy—simply retrofit existing fixtures to house the new LED lights. It was quickly discovered that LED technology breaks all the traditional rules, and old thinking can’t be applied to this new paradigm. Ruud knew that attempting to use old methods with new technology would result in nothing more than an expensive fixture with poor efficacy and a short lifespan.

The “easy” traditional standards weren’t going to work in the case of LEDs. Ruud started fresh and worked from the ground up—a Total Systems Approach. The research and development team completely re-thought each and every component of the fixture—from LED light source through optics and driver, right up to and including the housing—in order to maximize LED advantages in longevity, energy savings, and overall efficiency.
